When Mac heard about HB2, he was shocked and dismayed. So he took action where he could. “The only thing that was in my control was to rip the boys and girls signs off the bathrooms and say ‘all genders welcome.’ Because truly there isn’t a difference.”

As a business owner, Mac says, “Sometimes you get the feedback that [speaking up] is not good for business. You’re supposed to be behind the scenes.” But he encourages other owners who might be worried that taking a stance will lose them business. His experience has “been nothing but positive.” And he has learned that seemingly small gestures have far-reaching impact. When he put up a “safe space” sticker on the front door, “I thought it was the smallest thing. But it actually matters. There are people who take comfort and find safety in that little sign being there.”

Mac is quick to point out that putting up signs is “a small gesture—I’m not Nike, I’m not the NBA. I’m the size I am. I can only affect so many people, but the idea that I could even affect one person—that’s pretty cool to me.”
