Trump fires FBI director James Comey
The career of Comey, a Barack Obama nominee, hit numerous high-profile political controversies. He was in charge of the FBI’s investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton‘s mishandling of official emails, and the investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 presidential election.
In a statement, Trump says Comey’s firing “will mark a new beginning” for the FBI. The White House says the search for a new FBI director will begin immediately.
“Today, President Donald J. Trump informed FBI Director James Comey that he has been terminated and removed from office,” the White House statement reads.
Comey’s firing comes days after he testified on Capitol Hill about the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s election meddling and possible connections between Russia and Trump’s campaign.
